THE 5 PILLARS
OF HEALTH
Building habits in five key areas is more valuable to game readiness than endless hours at the console.
PHYSICAL MAINTENANCE
The Physical Maintenance pillar includes complementary components designed to help esports athletes find and maintain optimal health:
Fitness training to build and maintain strength and stamina
Quick drills to help athletes return to peak readiness during game play
Ergonomic considerations to avoid injury
Yoga to create body awareness and mental and physical ease
FITGMR’s physical maintenance training has been credited with helping professional teams build the endurance to play their best during tournaments. The training is tailored to esports athletes and includes customizing workouts to the abilities of individual gamers. The FITGMR app tracks fitness so athletes can see how much they are improving over time and maintain motivation to continue.
MENTAL CONDITIONING
Performance is influenced by the psychology, mental, and emotional state of esports athletes. If athletes are under-aroused, emotionally drained, or lacking focus, they won’t meet their potential. Due to the substantial cognitive effort required for peak performance, cognitive athletes are even more susceptible to mental performance fluctuations than traditional sports athletes.
FITGMR uses mental skills and conditioning training to enhance:
Emotion and attention regulation
Resiliency and fortitude
Team dynamics and culture
Communication and conflict resolution skills
Leadership development
Effective preparation and recovery
Burnout prevention
FITGMR training includes yoga and meditation. Current mindfulness research is describing what meditators have found for millennia, that these practices alter the brain in profound positive ways. FITGMR yoga and meditations reduce stress, foster healthy mental patterns, and cultivate concentration and zone mentality.
NUTRITION
Nutrition plays a critical role in gamers’ mental and physical health. Proper nutrition can improve or weaken the effectiveness of training efforts. Without quality foods eaten in appropriate quantities, no cognitive athlete can achieve his or her full potential.
The FITGMR nutritional philosophy is science-based and easy to follow; the Low Carb Healthy Fat Diet (LCHF). The FITGMR diet helps people lose weight, reduces insulin resistance, and protects against type 2 diabetes. The LCHF lifestyle means:
A lifestyle high in healthy fats and low in carbohydrates
Eating only real, whole and fresh foods
Eating foods that are not processed, packaged, or come in a box
Following a nutritious diet full of meat, fish, eggs, nuts, healthy fats and lots of different vegetables and some fruit
Getting rid of additives, chemicals, preservatives and other harmful ingredients.
The FITGMR app encourages gamers to eat a healthy diet by including it as a component of their FITGMR score.
Nutrition Network is our nutrition partner. Under the leadership of Dr. Tim Noakes, Nutrition Networks provides extensive content on the low carbohydrate, healthy fat diet that FITGMR advocates. Learn more about Nutrition Network.
SLEEP
Sleep is as important to our health as a healthy diet and regular physical activity. It affects our energy level, mood, performance and quality of life. Monitoring and optimizing sleep is essential for peak performance.
At FITGMR we help educate gamers and monitor sleep, including
How much sleep you get
Building habits that promote falling asleep at bedtime
Minimizing sleep disturbances that interrupt sleep
LIFESTYLE
At FITGMR, we believe that it is vital for a gamer to become a well-rounded person. The FITGMR program includes promoting activities that increase your abilities by expanding your scope beyond the game console.
We encourage and track activities from hobbies to additional pursuits to time spent in nature. David J. Epstein, in his book Range, finds success springs from this approach, saying “The challenge we all face is how to maintain the benefits of breadth, diverse experience, interdisciplinary thinking, and delayed concentration…” so time spent on arts, games, recreation, etc. factor into the FITGMR score.
In Japan, researchers are documenting the benefits of simply being outdoors in nature. FITGMR’s Lifestyle Pillar motto is, “Go outside and play!”
And meditation, the practice of “doing nothing,” has been shown to improve almost every aspect of performance, health, and well-being. FITGMR meditations are targeted to teach beginners to experienced meditators how to practice to provide stress relief, better sleep, and improved concentration, intuition, and creativity.
BUILD A HABIT OF BEING BETTER
The FITGMR system is built on 5 Pillars of Health that have been shown to enhance athletes’ readiness, performance, and lives. Developing these habits through the FITGMR program leads to the character traits associated with success: self-reflection, accountability, communication, adaptability and flexibility, zone mentality, respect for self and others, and follow-through.
The FITGMR App tracks your progress in each of the five pillars. Our FITGMR workouts and other content bridge the pillars, and coaches provide for individual needs and skills in ways that are engaging, effective, and fun.
